Freestyle / Re: Advice for turning Switch kono into Skopu
« Last post by (Hidden) on December 02, 2012, 10:28:26 PM »
HI Adam,

Couple of things that helped me:
1. Sail overpowered (if you have the chance!)
2. Wait longer before take off, and make sure the sail is fully powered up, so push with the back hand..also try to carve upwind more before take off
3. Sail more in front rather than behind you after ducking
4. In the air put sail as far forward as possible, sheet in with back hand loads and tuck up legs.. (same as SW kono)

Essentially you need to be landing past that certain point, where the sail is forward enough to go into the upwind 360. I think it all comes down to getting height in the move, if you get height and you rotate properly you will get past that point.

Probably you have nailed them since you posted anyway!!

Rigged North 4.5 superstar and 5.4 duke on white stick 430. All battens in the right place and feels nice giving the sails a new lease of life. Doesn't like Gastra poison 6.2. Think this maybe more suited to a battlestick. Will let you know as battlestick on route.

Freestyle / Custom Freestyle board

Maeli did you know F2 are now doing an 80 litre Rodeo for 2012? Probably worth checking out as it sounds exactly like what you are after. Maybe you should ask Rick Jendrusch what the board is like (he will say amazing I am sure) but find out how tall he is and how heavy.

Have to say board looks sick!! Not sure about the sail range 3.3m to 3.8m - is this the kind of sails you are using?

Website is here:

Yes but I read the transcript from the Boards chat with Mark and Jaeger Stone, seems like he is pretty busy making boards for Australia at the moment. I think trying to get one built and sent to Europe might be a challenge.

Severne have updated their website with official details of their 2013 sails, it has full details of the new Freek and S-1.

Freek sizes are 4.0, 4.4, 4.8, 5.2, 5.6, 5.9, 6.3

Check out how the weights compare to the Pure:

Sail Size   Freek   S-1   Pure
4.0 m2.67 kg2.52 kg3.0 kg
4.7/ 4.8 m2.95 kg2.69 kg3.4 kg
5.2/ 5.3 m3.1 kg2.88 kg3.5 kg

The S-1 has gone crazy light this year - the 5.6m weighs the same as the Pure 4.0m!!

The Freek is still light, but I guess with an extra batten and less e5 material it ends up a bit heavier than the S-1.

Hey Yves!

It sounds like your problem is both cases (sinking rail and bumping instead of jumping) is lack of speed, often you might have enough speed but as you start thinking about gybing or jumping you slow down as your body's position changes (stance).

Going faster is a difficult one as its down to lots of things, but the main one is to have a good stance that transfers all of the available wind power into the board moving forward. There are lots of tutorials on stance (google Jem Hall stance), but it really comes down to keeping the board flat and sheeting the sail in.

Once you are moving faster the jumping will come naturally, its not worth worrying about technique for jumping, its really the same as any sport or just jumping on the spot!

Good luck and hope you get lots of wind to practice!

What really helped me is focusing on pulling the sail back past my head, not down to the water. If you try to keep it near you it makes a huge difference as the sail is already vertical, when you throw the sail down to the back of the board it ends up near the water - you then have to wait for it to up back up to about waist high to do anything and by then all your speed is gone....
